6:00 pm
here's mitt romney trying to figure out the name of that thing that we americans call a dog. i'm sorry i'm just a guy who cares an awful lot about my country you sir are a fool you know what that is my terror cells. don't want to wish to featurism be a liberal and the christian. can really listen to.
6:01 pm
everyone what's going on thanks for tuning in to my brand new show that i've been working super hard all month to bring you called breaking the set and i'm your host abby martin i mean he smashing through the left right paradigm set in a media and political establishment this country to find a middle ground truth but so far the d.n.c. has been quite a love fest now instead of some loony over michelle obama were sitting back jaw dropping the charismatic speech from former president bill clinton but when much of the pundits were fixated on clinton i was too busy pay attention to the fact that the d.n.c. issued a vote yesterday to amend their party platform to include statutes both for god and jerusalem take a look. all those delegates in favor say in. all those delegates opposed say no. in the opinion of the chair two thirds of voted in the
6:02 pm
affirmative the motion is adopted and the platform has been amended as shown on the screen. thank you very much. does that sound like two thirds majority to you not so sure but what's even more shallow than this corrupt vote is how former house speaker nancy pelosi responded check it out. this is so mild in terms of want to date it's done it's over for moving on from there and it's a waste of time really to chop it down and tell her that that well pelosi i disagree it's not a waste of time to talk about the fact that the call to reinstate jerusalem as the capital of israel came from obama himself and it's certainly not a waste of time to talk about the president's underline intent to pander to the jewish vote just for the sake of deflecting criticism from the r. and c. but what a lot of people don't get is that obama's acknowledgment of jerusalem as the undivided capital of israel is a complete slap in the face to millions of arab americans who consider it
6:03 pm
palestinian land perhaps the question to ask is why would an internationally contentious question even be up for debate and america's domestic platform should just be left to the leaders who can broker peace between palestine and israel instead of to a d.n.c. party platform that may have just served to undermine the entire process that's why i'm breaking the set. i. organize i don't know about you but i'm ready to move past these ridiculous party political conventions charades already and you don't want to know why because it isn't news these conventions are just glitzy distractions from real issues that are happening right now then start happening under our noses that are changing the world around us that they are far from being prioritized by the corporate controlled press one thing that i most disturbed by is the use of unmanned aerial vehicles which are better known as drones. drone warfare is now commonplace for the
6:04 pm
united states and since obama's presidency well he's become the freakin king of them carrying out strikes every couple of days and every day it seems that i hear about a new body count of suspected terrorists taken out by drone strikes in the yemen pakistan afghanistan somalia and wherever else in the world the u.s. military is looking for moving targets now a lot of people argue that hey drove the smart way to fight wars now saying that they have pinpoint precision and they only target the bad guys however reports of shown that drones actually target innocent people and investigation by the bureau for the sunday times has revealed that the cia's drone campaign in pakistan has carried out deliberate strikes on mourners at funerals killing dozens of civilians who have gone to either help rescue victims are on or their dead also low civilian casualty counts are often cited as official of drone warfare but you know why the administration can tout such low civilian casualties because if you simply happen
6:05 pm
to be in the vicinity of a drone strike well then you're murder was justified so as a duo do you face potential budget cuts there's a strong push by the u.s. arms industry to sell more drones to foreign countries so far up to sixty six countries are eligible to purchase them so once again the d.o.d. continues to play the victim of these impending cuts but get this the congressional research clearly shows that the u.s. arms exports amounted to sixty six point three billion dollars last year a record profit so to find the fact that weapons are the number one u.s. export. but don't worry if congress doesn't allow the easing of export restrictions the pentagon can still make a pretty penny by selling drones right here in the good old u.s. of a earlier this year thanks to the f.a.a. modernization and reform act of two thousand and twelve the f.a.a. got permits to fly drones and u.s. air space giving licenses to the government local police forces universities and
6:06 pm
a whole host of agencies i mean for god's sake even the environmental protection agency has drones now ladies and gentlemen the doors are officially open for unmanned drone spine all over the u.s. hold up take a look at the smartphone app it was developed by a student at new york university named josh bagley the app is called drone plus it would give you an interactive map that tracks drone strikes and could even send push notifications when a new strike was reported but unfortunately apple's app store team has just rejected the app citing a violation of the app store guidelines which banned software that presents excessively objectionable or crude content even though there wasn't anything graphic on the app the church makes me wonder about the intentions of digital gate keepers at the app store you know what i think i think that if we as americans and people of this planet are going to be watched from these unmanned drones everywhere it's only fair that we get to watch back.
6:07 pm
now as a syrian conflict a teary it's into a bloody civil war and once again highlights the increasingly tense relationship between the u.s. iran and israel the rhetoric has heated up so much that all sides are weighing in leaving it to you and me to sort through the rhetoric and find the truth. so what can we expect from each country as they struggle to gain the upper hand in a political play that may not favor any one one country act without the other and where will all the fear mongering lead to here to help us break this all down as jamal abby policy director of the national iranian american council thanks for coming on so you worked in congress for a while and you are pretty much an expert when it comes to u.s. foreign policy affairs regarding iran we just heard general dempsey recently talk
6:08 pm
about i mean quote he said diplomacy sanctions and sabotage need more time i mean when we're talking about iran sanctions here are they really achieving the desired result or will it inhibit a troop deployment a diplomatic solution here that's i mean that's actually the problem here that sanctions have in many regards stood in the way of a diplomatic solution the last time that the u.s. and iran actually went to the table a few months ago. the real problem was that you did put some offers on the table as far as curbing their nuclear program and they wanted in exchange for the u.s. or the e.u. to curb some of their sanctions this was supposed to be a sort of near term confidence building step and i'm not saying that the iranians necessarily were asking for the most equitable deal possible but they definitely wanted a quid pro quo at least on a limited level and the u.s. was unwilling to give up any of the sanctions in order to get an iranian deal so
6:09 pm
really the sanctions haven't been so much leverage in order to get the iranians to do you know what the u.s. wants it to do the same as have been sort of a testament to how tough we're going to be and unless you ron is willing to fully capitulate it seems like the u.s. is unwilling to lift and so they're just going to continue to escalate tensions are going to continue to mount and we get closer and closer to a military confrontation and we see there's obama right there signing you know the new sanctions that we saw on iran i mean you know. he talks about sabotage you know you talk about they are assassination of nuclear scientists and and also the stocks that virus i mean all of these things and what you're saying you know the sanctions really are causing much more harm and they are good but i wanted to say something else that martin dempsey said recently in which he said quote the attack by israel unilaterally would quote clearly delay but probably not destroy iran's nuclear program and we already know netanyahu is really mean to take this out but what is
6:10 pm
he saying here is he's saying hold up don't attack israel unless we're on board i mean what does this rhetoric really mean when you break it down if if you go to any of the military officials who actually you know anybody that americans can name. robert gates leon panetta all these guys are saying the same thing we don't want war with the war on the israeli national security saying the exact same thing really you have one guy bibi netanyahu and perhaps really driving this policy as well as neoconservatives here in the united states but the reason these guys are saying this is because there is no military solution any way you look at it if israel goes in with strikes they manage to delay the program in iran maybe one two years if the u.s. does it they can go and maybe delay it two or three years but what all these guys are saying is that what that does is it maybe buys us a couple years but it convinces iran to do what it hasn't done yet which is
6:11 pm
actually decide to build a nuclear weapon. inspectors and go for with a nuclear weapons program which as you know maybe not a lot of people remember but in two thousand and seven the u.s. national intelligence estimate said you've gone shelled its nuclear program suspended it put it on on ice and it still has continued to keep it sort of in this suspended state so we actually go to war with them we buy a little bit of time but then we end up guaranteeing what we're trying to prevent which is an iranian nuclear weapons program and we've been hearing this. rhetoric for pretty much the last decade i mean plus i mean about iran's nuclear program reminds me of the congolese the rice we can't wait till the mushroom cloud i mean the whole of iraq build up but you know talk a little bit about the program itself i mean is there are they building a nuclear weapon we heard betray us come out say that they want you just talked about how they kind of have it in suspension here what rhetoric can we really believe when it comes to their nuclear program and how far it's gone. i mean we
6:12 pm
should take all the rhetoric with a grain of salt but you know what the israeli intelligence what u.s. intelligence what everybody's ingredient about is the fact that they're not actively building a weapon now iran is probably pursuing a hedging strategy they're putting together these capabilities these are civilian capabilities but they could be converted into military capabilities they're also potentially doing research on the military side of things but they haven't they haven't flipped that switch they haven't made that decision they're still keeping their options open and that's why you know president obama consistently says at the end of the day this is about convincing to you iranians it's not in their interest to pursue a weapon military strikes doesn't do that sanctions really you know when we talk about sanctions buying time they're buying time to convince b.b. not to go in and strike and in the meantime they're you know hurting civilians in iran where you are seeing new reports every day about medical supplies drying up ordinary people getting hit i don't think
6:13 pm
a lot of people realize the damage that sanctions do but to wrap this up really quickly i wanted to talk to you about using syria i mean here with geo politically syria is a very hot bed right now and we see a lot of rhetoric not only about the assad regime but also about iran sending and help to back assad are we going to use syria as kind of a proxy playground to build up this rhetoric even more and to potentially use it as a means to you know do military action you know i think that the trouble here is that we have real suffering inside of syria and a lot of these. us you're on they're all jockeying for influence nobody is actually talking about solving this problem when you have parties not willing to actually engage one another when you have the us excluding iran from the talks that's not a way to a solution that's a way to to more confrontation i would note that one of the real concerns about the syria situation is that some folks are arguing that this provides a window to go into iran not syria but go and we're on because this disrupts the supply routes to hezbollah and so the retaliation against israel wouldn't be as
6:14 pm
severe as otherwise they would be so you have a lot of people trying to take this as an opportunity to pursue their own agenda and i think it's really problematic we have so much suffering going on that people are actually pursuing a real solution absolutely seizing upon upon the moment and just really pursue their geopolitical interests and you have bahrain i mean the suffering going on there thank you so much for coming on and sharing your opinion you're well thank you. now if you like what you see so far go to our you tube channel and subscribe youtube dot com slash break in the set or a website r.t. dot com slash usa look i know the nature of the internet is that hate is going to hate and trolls are going to troll but if you're the more intelligent minded feel free to write me and let me know what you think also if you're wondering about what i'm doing or bitching about when i'm not on or follow me on twitter abby martin and i'll let you take a break from my preaching for now but stay tuned to hear the good and the bad when we highlight our hero and villain of the day next.
6:15 pm
6:16 pm
i'm lauren lyster. here feel like you're being brainwashed by the mainstream media do you ever get the feeling of the people who are supposed to be telling you the real news are actually telling you lies well here's some food for thought breaking news folks this is huge and this n.b.c. was the number one cable channel when the d.n.c. ratings war on tuesday night the first time in their sixteen year history they were able to garner the highly coveted spot take a look at some of the exuberant coverage from that night. listening to new in
6:17 pm
coverage of the democratic national convention with in charlotte north carolina the first lady tonight. a long personal emotional frankly excellent speech. even phil griffin the beloved network's president couldn't help but bask in the glory he said quote to be number one on a big night when we've never been number one before to beat a couple of networks to beat c.n.n. to beat fox it's just a credit to everybody here it's exciting. bravo we should all be overjoyed just like phil right or wrong the real tragedy here is that all of this says that more democrats were watching their t.v. sets than republicans and all it does m s n b c know it they're wearing their lean forward democratic branding like a badge of honor but let's just wake up for one second we're completely missing the point here when did it become ok to have partisan networks in the first place when was it ever ok for the news to align itself with
6:18 pm
a particular party or ideology and do so without question without debate what joseph pulitzer say if he saw us now he'd be rolling in his grave you know my favorite story of pulitzer is that when he ran his newspapers he was a staunch believer in always separating editorial from the advertising in fact he practically had the employees work in different buildings you see pulitzer was a man who understood what our media establishment have completely lost sight of now if we're ruled by corporations we're not ruled by objectivity if we're ruled by what we think people want to hear we're not giving them what they need to hear and what they need to hear is the truth. now if you've ever driven between san diego and los angeles you've surely seen santa know for a nuclear power plant it's those billowing twin reactors that create quite the scenery when seen from the stretch of beach highway but could there be trouble ahead i mean just last week southern california suffered an earthquake swarm mean
6:19 pm
hundreds of quakes hit the area take a look. scientists are unclear about what causes these quakes warms but they expect the work to come and expected to go to be active for a few days some time see swarms can be active for a few weeks or months and my gosh a few months fault lines near a nuclear facility nice joining me now to discuss how this is a disaster waiting to happen in light of the fukushima nuclear crisis is our team producer ramon. ramon you were out there during this swarm of earthquakes i mean is everything wrapped up now or what i mean are they still happening. well there are constantly earthquakes in the area in the days following there were hundreds of smaller as quakes measuring in the twos and threes so a lot of them were felt by people around here but i mean the really big concern is
6:20 pm
that i don't know freight is within the vicinity of four major faults within sixty miles of four major faults that you know have a very strong potential for a magnitude earthquake so definitely a lot of concern here and and the thing is is that the reactor gets in and offer has been shut down since january when there was a leak found in and still no repairs have been made so a lot of concerns about whether it should be even turned on again yeah that's great that it was shut down before this happened but i mean it you it calls into question the twenty three sr reactors i know that the santa no free one wasn't built by g.e. but you know the fukushima one was and we also have twenty three sister reactors near identical design in this country some built by faults ramon i mean did we not learn from the fukushima crisis chernobyl we put a sarcophagus over it but it's there's a crack i mean it just seems like this is such a disaster waiting to happen. no yeah you're absolutely right now a lot of these nuclear power plants which were built in the seventies and eighties
6:21 pm
do have these general electric reactors much like the one which. was at fukushima excuse me so and concerns over these mark one reactors have been brought up ever since the seventy's when some very high profile g.e. engineers quit saying that these were susceptible to a very serious accident that very serious accident has manifested itself when fukushima so that's why there's been a lot of scrutiny really here and sent over a and like you said the twenty three other reactors around the country and right now it seems like the administration and even mitt romney have suggested that we even invest in more nuclear power so despite the fact that there are concerns in the public it seems like the u.s. is going full steam ahead with nuclear power it is interesting ramon that we do not hear about how this is essentially technological insanity i heard ralph nader explain it as that once i mean it it's clean until you're dealing with the waste and the potential disastrous fallout that could happen if something indeed does
6:22 pm
happen like another you know tsunami or earthquake i mean what do you think about just nuclear technology in general is this just technological insanity that you think that we are not dealing with the fact that this waste cannot be really dealt with for hundreds of millions of years i mean what are we doing messing with something that we properly cannot harness. no you make a really great point abby and a lot of the argument for these nuclear power plants is that they're safer for the environment then coal or something like that because of the carbon emissions yet we see in the case of santa no free where an earthquake studies being done right now because even if that reactor doesn't go back online there's going to be nuclear waste there for you many many years to come i mean there's already you know some attempts to remove some of that ways because they know that you know even if the reactor doesn't come on something very seriously something very serious is in the ground and even in nuclear power plants that have been shut down before you can
6:23 pm
build anything in there because there's all this radioactive material that is obviously not healthy for the public indeed and you know i can't help but just speculate the fact that general electric also owns and s. and the c n n b c that that could be another reason why we're not really hearing about the crisis or the potential disastrous effects thanks so much for coming on ramon for shit. i. i like every day i come across another element of the surveillance state creeping into our lives so on this show i'm going to watch big brother recently the new york police department has been not only in the news for the reckless shooting nine civilians during their attempt to accost the gun wielding man in front of the empire state building but also for their illegal warrantless spying programs secretly instated in muslim neighborhoods businesses and mosques across new york new jersey and
6:24 pm
connecticut now that the program has been blown wide open the n.y.p.d. faces serious legal trouble for it. this morning muslim advocates filed a lawsuit in federal court on behalf of american muslims in new jersey challenging the new york police department's discriminatory and invasive surveillance program the new york city police launched the undercover spy operation after nine eleven targeting muslims in new york new jersey and connecticut the n.y.p.d. has denied it targeted muslims specifically saying it was only following leads unsurprisingly the surveillance program never produced single leading to anything terrorist related at all but new york city mayor michael bloomberg and police commissioner ray kelly still defend it to this day i guess racial profiling is justification enough for them to cross their city jurisdiction to blatantly disregard the rule of law but really you know what else can we expect from the same police department that launched the stop and frisk program the same program that was
6:25 pm
a tourist for unjustifiable racial profiling in pat downs of thousands of african-americans on new york streets now. then my p.d. is making even more headway into their controversial reputation by not only crossing city jurisdiction but crossing country lines the n.y.p.d. is extending their branches around the world and is launching ones in london lyons hamburg toronto and most recently tell of the israel yep you heard me right the n.y.p.d. is expanding their offices to israel after n.y.p.d. officials decided that the department needed a closer working relationship with the israeli police for its book u.s. citizens already are giving israel over three billion dollars in foreign aid with your taxpayer dollars apparently that's not enough i wonder how new york city taxpayers would feel about even more of their hard earned money going to open police branches in israel the york city police department and mayor michael bloomberg have used the nine eleven attacks to justify their complete and utter
6:26 pm
contempt for upholding a lawful society which ironically is the job of the police department to do by stopping random people on the street and treating them like criminals without probable cause or spying on muslim communities not only in their city but cities and other states unbeknownst to those state officials is unacceptable and completely outrageous. but you know i just remember this is the same police department that accepted a four point six million dollars bribe i mean donation sorry from j.p. morgan chase just months before the emergence of the occupy wall street movement erupted on wall street in new york city the banks gift to the police force was the largest in the history of the foundation and able to n.y.p.d. to essentially act as corporate sponsored thugs to brutalize occupy wall street protesters according to counterpunch one insightful member of the n.y.p.d. posted the following he said regarding the officer working for and being paid by some of the richest people and organizations in the city if not the world and
6:27 pm
forcing the mandates of the private employer in effect allowing the officer to become the praetorian guard of the elite of the city well put at least not everyone with the n.y.p.d. is corrupt to the core and recognize the absurdity of being sponsored by wall street bankers to effectively squash any and all peaceful dissent an opposition to their criminal enterprises. but putting this all into context here the n.y.p.d. has simply gone too far so what is it ok for a police department that's supposed to be working for the people not only were teeny profiling spy regularly brutalized the citizens of this country but then to spread these practices as if there's some shining example to the rest of the world and some actually consider the n.y.p.d. to be the best police force in the world and the country don't we deserve better than this i think so so let's done man to better join me and break the set.
